Geopolitical easing and supply-demand support converge as the metals sector stages a strong rebound

After today's opening in the domestic futures market, the metals sector stood out, with precious metals and nonferrous metals strengthening together and becoming the focus of the board. Shanghai gold and Shanghai silver surged sharply, while Shanghai tin, Shanghai copper, and Shanghai aluminum also rose in sync, showing a rapid recovery in short-term risk appetite. At the same time, international gold and silver prices pulled back intraday after fresh uncertainty from the Middle East surfaced, but overall they still held up well. The volatility in the metals market reflects not only the sentiment shock brought by geopolitical change, but also the complex tug-of-war between macro expectations and industrial fundamentals.

Precious metals: safe-haven logic has not fully faded

The main driver of the latest lead from precious metals was the temporary decline in geopolitical risk premiums. Gu Fengda, chief analyst at Guoxin Futures, said that improving expectations for a U.S.-Iran peace agreement significantly boosted market risk appetite and pushed gold and silver to rebound quickly. However, the Middle East has not truly entered a stable phase, and local clashes and sudden events could still trigger another wave of safe-haven demand at any time.

Over the medium to long term, the basis for a higher price center in precious metals has not been shaken. The restructuring of the global political and economic order, rising fiscal pressure in the United States, and the continued de-dollarization trend are all reinforcing gold's strategic allocation value. At the same time, central banks around the world continue to add to gold reserves, providing solid support for prices. By comparison, silver, platinum, and palladium, in addition to their financial attributes, also have strong industrial attributes, so their moves are more affected by real demand changes. That gives them greater short-term elasticity, but also sharper swings.

Nonferrous metals: sentiment repair and supply constraints coexist

Compared with precious metals, the rise in nonferrous metals reflects both a rebound in sentiment and improved fundamentals. Taking copper as an example, copper concentrate treatment charges have fallen into negative territory, indicating that ore-side tightness remains severe. At the same time, domestic refined copper inventories continue to decline, and LME copper inventories are also trending lower, which means the global copper market is still in a tight supply situation. Even if geopolitical tensions ease, the core support logic for copper prices is unlikely to be fully reversed in the short term.

The aluminum market is showing a mix of bullish and bearish factors. On the one hand, better risk appetite is lifting prices; on the other hand, if shipping risks in the Strait of Hormuz ease, pressure on raw-material transport and energy supply should decline, and some previously constrained capacity may return, which would weigh on aluminum prices. As a result, aluminum may depend more on the pace of supply recovery and the real improvement in demand.

In zinc, treatment charges for zinc concentrate remain low, supporting prices through tight raw materials, but smelter output continues to grow, limiting upside. On the demand side, galvanized-sheet inventories have fallen somewhat, but overall inventory levels are still high, and weakness in property remains a constraint. By contrast, faster infrastructure investment growth is providing some floor support for zinc consumption, so prices are likely to stay firm and volatile in the short term.

Overall, this round of gains in the metals sector is driven both by the easing of geopolitical risk and by a genuinely tight supply-demand backdrop. But the market does not yet have the conditions for a one-way sustained rally. Over the next period, whether metals prices can stay strong will still depend on three things: first, whether tensions in the Middle East truly cool; second, what policy signal the Federal Reserve sends at its rate-setting meeting; and third, whether inventory drawdowns and end-demand recovery can reinforce each other.
